Dubuque, Iowa to Clinton, Iowa
I spoke with my dad last night, and he said that his family, who immigrated from Germany, started their life in the U.S. in Dubuque. He didn't know details, but he said they talked about it all of the time.
We left Dubuque around 7:00 a.m. and it was clear, but then fog started appeared.
About 1.5 hours into the trip, we hit major fog.
As we entered the wall of fog, our visibility was close to zero (1/16th mile)!
We struggled to see for at least an hour, using radar and GPS, and moving at a slow pace (5 mph). At about 1 hour into the fog..... we heard fog horn alert ahead of us. Kip Looked at the Rader and a very large object began appearing dead ahead .....Kip yelled "It's a f*$@ing barge!"
Kip pulled off of the channel to the side, and we looked outside, and here is what we saw...

We were a bit surprised and shaken, but kept going. We eventually got out of the fog and made our way to Lock 12. Kip is obsessed with eating lunch at 11:30 a.m. - - - "I've been eating lunch at that time for 27 years" so we had lunch at 11:30 a.m.

"Twilight" Paddleboat
We went across a very wide section of the Mississippi and the water got quite rough. There was a barge in Lock 13, so we rocked in the water for about 1.5 hours waiting for them to get through. We stopped at the Clinton Marina and paid our $15 docking fee, walked FOREVER to go to a grocery store, showered, had dinner, and tucked in.
Statistics for those of you who are interested:
We went 60 miles today and went through two Locks
Hours on engine so far: 38
Miles traveled so far: 253
Number of Locks We Went Through So Far: 11
