Trempealeau, Wisconsin to Lansing, Iowa

Kip was up at 5:00 a.m. and woke me up at 6:15 because a barge was 2 miles from lock 6 just outside of marina, and he wanted to go through it before the barge arrived (otherwise we would have been delayed an hour or two).

As we traveled down the river, we came across a barge holding area.  Companies rent or buy barges and hire the tugboats to move them around.  From what we could tell, they were empty.

We traveled 54 miles to Lansing, Iowa and went through Locks 6, 7 and 8 along the way.

Lansing is a quiet, beautiful town.  We settled in and then walked around the town.  We stopped and purchased a few items we needed from the hardware store, and then walked up a hill to look at the amazing houses.  Many of them from the late 1800's and they had signs on them explaining who built the home and who lives there now.  This beauty was at the top of the hill and had quite a view of the river and the bridge.

We started to walk back to the marina, and we saw some interesting sights!  First was a "Dead End" sign at the bottom of a steep hill and the road went into the river.

Then, as we were enjoying a cold drink on the Visitor Center bench, we heard a train.  Cars were driving down the street, and along comes the train, right next to the cars!

We ate supper on the dock and enjoyed the view.  We are really enjoying our trip and are so glad we decided to retire.
